Francis Family Farm

Francis Rd Off HWY 89 W
The Francis Family Farm began operating in 1886 after some of the family moved from Francisco to the Johnstown Community.  What started as small sustenance farming grew into a wheat/flue-cured tobacco operation, and livestock operation until the early 1980s when it downsized into sustenance farming again.  After a couple of years of sustenance farming, it grew back into a small livestock farming operation and has remained that way since while also incorporating sound forestry practices.

Mike Martin Farm

1175 Asbury Rd.

Mike will demonstrate haylage bale wrapping. Hay is wrapped in a plastic sheet that prevents air from spoiling the product. He uses this method of preserving hay for his cattle because grass preserved in this manner will ferment much as regular silage. The nutrient value will be closer to fresh grass than hay that must dry for a longer period, reducing the moisture content. Mike will have equipment on hand to show the entire procedure.
